What is Achilles Tendon Injury?
Achilles tendon injury is an injury that affects the tendons that connect the calf muscle to the heel. Achilles tendon is a strong fibrous cord.
If the Achilles tendon is too tight, it is very likely that the tendon is torn and eventually injured. Tendon injury can be very painful and sometimes cause walking difficulty.

Risk Factors for Achilles Tendon Injury
There are many risk factors for Achilles tendon injury, such as:
- Age: the age of patients with this disease is usually between 40-50 years.
- Gender: the percentage of men with Achilles Tendon Injury is 5 times higher than women.
- Sports: Achilles injuries often occur in sports involving running, jumping, soccer, basketball, and tennis.
- Steroid injections: Many doctors sometimes inject steroids into the ankle joint to relieve pain and inflammation. However, this treatment can weaken the surrounding tendons and result in an Achilles tendon injury.
- Some antibiotics: Fluoroquinolone antibiotics, such as Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) or Levofloxacin (levaquin), could increase the risk of Achilles tendon injury.
Achilles Tendon Injury Treatments
Torn tendons are sometimes treated using casts, but in most cases, surgery is an alternative. After surgery, casts are installed to stabilize the area.
If the tendon can be healed on its own without surgery, the doctor may recommend using casts for 10 to 12 weeks.
Although the recovery period is slow and can last up to 6 months, a combination of exercise and physical therapy can help most patients recover faster.
Achilles Tendon Injury Prevention
If you do have dense activity, then you need to do these things to prevent Achilles Tendon Injury:
- Stretch and strengthen the calf muscles. Don’t forget to always stretch, especially the calf and hind legs before doing physical activity.
- Do not always exercise with high intensity, this is very likely to make you injured.
- Increase the intensity of the exercise slowly. Usually, this injury can occur as a result of your body’s shock because of a sudden increase in exercise intensity.
